Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the squad's ten-game without a victory start to the top-flight season.

Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.

Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.

Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of games for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.

The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they start the process of appointing a new manager.

Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.

The former West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
