Jude Bellingham Must Eliminate the Petulance to Earn a Central Role With Coach Tuchel.
For Bellingham to aims to fight his way once again into England’s strongest team, he would be wise to do away with the nonsense. His reaction when he saw that he was about to come up after a match of inconsistency in the match against Albania fell short of expectations.
"I don’t want to make more out of it but I stick to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect for the players who enter the game," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you must accept them as a player."
The midfielder must understand. It was unnecessary for a tantrum. The captain had recently scored to make England leading by two in a dead rubber match, the game had six minutes to go and he, who had not played particularly well, had just been booked for bringing down the Albanian striker. This could scarcely be called a debatable decision. Indeed it would have been foolish for the manager to keep Bellingham on the pitch considering it was possible Bellingham would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the tournament by receiving a second caution.
Shifting Focus on Himself
But Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. No one could overlook the 22-year-old’s disappointment as he realized that his replacement was ready for another player. His arms went up in exasperation and even though he shook Tuchel’s hand after making his way to the touchline it was obvious that the head coach was not impressed.
This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He congratulated Rashford for sending in the ball for Kane to score the team's second, but his other actions was counterproductive. It is not as if complaining was going to alter the decision. Tuchel has repeatedly emphasized honoring the team structure and the value of showing proper conduct.
Under Scrutiny
The midfielder, left out of the team last month, is being watched carefully upon his return to the team in the current camp. Essentially he was being assessed and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to his substitution as England wrapped up a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a feisty challenge from Albania.
The System and the Setup
This implies opinions are divided on if the team perform optimally including Bellingham. What we saw was inconclusive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager at the start. He has provided England organization and direction lately, employing a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but the approach changed in this match. The young defender was handed his international debut, Wharton made his first start for England and the role of John Stones as a makeshift midfielder gave a faint echo to the Manchester club's team that won three trophies.
Mixed Performance
Bellingham had ups and downs. He made a chance for Eberechi Eze during the second half but often looked trying too hard. He made many hurried and errant passes. An unnecessary confrontation with an Albania midfielder in the early stages. The team looked disjointed after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents came after Bellingham gave the ball away. His caution occurred when he lost the ball to Broja and brought down Broja.
Squad Strength Shows
Ultimately the bench quality was decisive. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who appeared better suited to the spot that Bellingham had played during the first half, and the Arsenal winger. Later Saka provided a corner kick for the captain to open the scoring. This served as a reminder that dead-ball situations will play a key role at the World Cup.
Bridge Still Stands
However, the focus was on Bellingham. The quality of Rashford's cross for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked in the ridiculousness of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, the focus was on him. Tuchel came over to his side and directed Bellingham to acknowledge the travelling England fans. Their relationship remains intact. The coach isn't ready to abandon the player just yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to give him the central position is not guaranteed.
