On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
